Staff Software Engineer

The Genesys Digital & AI group builds the innovations that power customer experiences for 7,500+ organisations worldwide. As a Staff Engineer you'll lead technical execution for core backend services and data flows that underpin our Agentic AI products that run at global scale. You'll co‑design clean contracts with AI specialists, steward reliability and cost, and help a team deliver sensible, secure systems quickly. We don't take ourselves seriously and we iterate rapidly to deliver valuable applied AI features to as many customers as possible.

What You Will Do:

• Own impactful services end‑to‑end. Lead discovery, design and delivery for critical backend capabilities (APIs, events/streams, storage, consistency, caching) including on‑call readiness and post‑GA care.
• Design for scale and world-class stability.
• Be the glue between teams. Partner with Agentic AI specialists, Product, Security, SRE and Data to design stable interfaces, plan dependencies and land change without drama.
• Raise the engineering bar. Establish coding/testing standards, code review habits, observability, SLOs, runbooks and incident/postmortem practice.
• Coach and influence. Mentor senior and mid‑level engineers; facilitate design reviews; give kind, direct feedback; build a learning culture and a calm, predictable delivery cadence.
• Make pragmatic trade‑offs. Balance latency, reliability, security and cost. Use profiling, load testing and back‑pressure/limits to keep systems healthy under load.
• Security and governance by design. Champion threat modelling, least‑privilege IAM, secrets hygiene and data retention/residency with strong auditability.
• Communicate crisply. Write clear proposals and status updates; translate technical options into business outcomes for stakeholders and leadership.

• Create golden paths and guardrails. Standardise service templates, libraries, API/event design, schema/versioning, automated testing, and documentation that accelerate all teams.

• Champion cloud best practices on AWS (serverless, datastores, Bedrock, etc.) and steer continuous improvement of our release processes and infrastructure.

What We're Looking For:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or related disciplines.
• 6+ years building backend or platform software, with evidence of technical leadership at scale.
• Deep skill in Python and/or Java, plus algorithms, data structures and distributed-systems design.
• Experience with service and event‑driven architectures (gRPC/REST, Kafka/Kinesis/SQS), schema evolution, idempotency, backwards‑compatible APIs and data modelling.
• Comfortable with AWS (IAM, networking, DynamoDB/RDS, S3, ECS/Lambda/serverless) and modern DevOps/SRE (CI/CD, IaC, automated testing, observability, runbooks, on‑call).
• Comfortable partnering with AI/ML teams and supporting LLM‑adjacent workloads (feature/vector stores, evaluation harnesses, safety/guardrails) even if you're not the model expert.
• Track record of technical leadership – influencing roadmaps, unblocking teams and collaborating with non-engineers.
• Excellent communication skills – you can align diverse stakeholders around a clear technical vision.
• A growth mindset, healthy pragmatism, and the ability to make complex ideas simple.
• Demonstrated bias-to-action and proactive decision-making.
• Demonstrated awareness of modern AI technologies and their implications (safety, privacy, reliability), with role-appropriate skills developed through internal training and applied practice

Desirable Experience or Appetite to Learn:

• Analytics and data science frameworks/technologies, e.g. Apache Spark, Pandas.
• Batch data processing (Spark/Flink/EMR/Glue), and data quality tooling.
• Event-driven architecture, e.g. using Kafka, Kinesis, SQS.
• Machine learning concepts and frameworks.
• LLM systems concepts (tooling, retrieval, evals) and cost/latency trade‑offs.
• Observability at scale: metrics, traces, logs, SLOs and error budgets.
• Security, privacy and governance of enterprise software.
