The role

We are looking for a junior data analyst/scientist, who will work on research and policy analysis projects that cover diverse areas of good governance, such as spending efficiency, public procurement performance, corruption risk modelling, and competition policy. You will become a part of a close-knit interdisciplinary research team and regularly collaborate with internationally renowned experts and partner organizations. Your typical project tasks would range from preparing large-scale public contracting datasets for analysis (e.g. connecting contracts to company-level data), modelling and comparing contracting risks in specific sectors in Latin American countries, to evaluating contracting outcomes due to regulatory changes in EU-funded tenders.

The position entails working in a team on:

Data cleaning and preparation in R and/or Python,

Quantitative analysis in R and/or Python applied on administrative Big Data,

Literature reviews and syntheses,

Drafting policy reports and publication of scientific articles,

Presenting research results to clients.

Expected skills and qualifications

A Master's degree in economics, political science, sociology or similar. Preferably ongoing or completed PhD in a relevant field.

Proficiency in at least one of the following: R or Python.

Proficiency in English, both written and oral.

Additional languages are an advantage, especially Spanish, French and Russian.

Track record of participating in quantitative research projects is an advantage, as well as past working experience and interest in good governance, corruption, collusion or public procurement research.

Familiarity with some of the following research methodologies is essential: OLS and logistic regression, matching estimators, panel data analysis, various ML methods.

HUF gross for full-time employment depending on level of education, skills and experience.

GTI operates independently from political parties or special interest groups thanks to its diversified portfolio consisting of European research funds, government contracts, and data provision services. Our interdisciplinary research spans political science, economics, law, and data science, with the goal of understanding and improving governance quality.

The aim of the Institute is to better understand the causes, characteristics, and consequences of low-quality governance with interdisciplinary analysis, drawing on political science, economics, law, and data science. We regularly work with the World Bank, IMF, the European Commission, Transparency International, Tax Justice Network, the UNDP, and a range of national governments from countries such as Sweden, Jamaica or Kenya. Our data and research have been featured by leading global institutions and cited in outlets such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Deutsche Welle.

GTI started as a cooperation among like-minded researchers in 2015, but it has been building a professional organizational structure during the last five years. We operate with around 20 permanent staff of executives, senior and junior analysts who work together as a close-knit team, supporting each other closely. As part of our analytics work, we created a complex data pipeline of regularly collecting contracting information for over 2% of annual world GDP. As part of our mission to serve the public good, we make most of this data available for stakeholders on a non-commercial basis.
