Data Scientist

The Gist

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our team and help solve one of the biggest challenges of our time. As part of GL1, you won't just be tuning hyperparameters; you'll be building the data semantics and intelligence layer for the UK's green finance transition. You'll work directly with our founders (ex-McKinsey & BCG), and have all the latest tools at your hands on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to ship ML products that actually move the needle on decarbonisation.

We are a London-based climate fintech with a dedicated development hub in Budapest. Our mission is simple but ambitious: equip banks with the data and intelligence they need to finance the climate transition.

Backed by VC investors and the UK's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, we collaborate with global leaders in green finance. We combine the agility of a start-up with the strategic depth of a global consultancy – and we need you to help us scale.

What You'll Be Building

• Tame Complex Data:
  You'll take messy, real-world datasets (national EPC registers, Land Registry data, financial logs) and immerse yourself in the domain subject to ensure our models are built on clean and valid data.
• Explore and Define:
  You don't just accept inputs; you challenge them. You'll explore and interpret the data within the green lending business context to ensure we are optimising for the metrics that actually matter.
• Real-World Impact Models:
  You'll design and train ML models that drive tangible decisions – like optimising retrofit recommendations, predicting energy efficiency (EPC) potential, and estimating carbon savings for millions of UK households.
• End-to-End Ownership:
  You'll own the full lifecycle – from data architecture and feature engineering to training, validation, and deploying to production.
• Transparency & Quality:
  You'll treat code as craft, documenting your methodologies to ensure our "black boxes" are transparent and interpretable for the whole team and clients likewise.
• Autonomy & Innovation:
  You'll have the freedom and responsibility to manage your own projects and timelines. You'll proactively seek and identify new opportunities. Whether it's a smarter way to model heat pump ROI or a new approach to verifying green eligibility, we want you to find the opportunity and build it.

What You're Bringing

• DS & ML Blend:
  You combine strong data science capabilities – independently interpret and extract insights from complex datasets – with the ML engineering rigor to translate that exploratory work into robust production pipelines.
• Python Native:
  You're fluent in the standard ML ecosystem (scikit‑learn, XGBoost, pandas, etc.) and know how to write clean, production-ready code.
• Data Fluency:
  You've handled large volumes of data before. You know that 80% of the work is pre-processing and feature engineering, and you're good at it.
• Analytical Depth:
  You're able to independently interpret data and evaluate outcomes. You go beyond technical implementation to understand the "why" and exercise sound judgment throughout development process.
• MLOps Mindset:
  You're comfortable with ML engineering workflows – versioning, automated pipelines, containerisation, and performance monitoring are part of your routine.
• Pragmatic & Flexible:
  You understand start-up life. Requirements evolve, ambiguity happens, and you're happy to adapt and solve the problem in front of you.

Bonus Points

• GCP Experience:
  You've built data and ML pipelines using Google Cloud Platform native services.
• Modern Tooling:
  You use agentic coding tools to prototype faster and handle routine scripting, but you have the expertise to critically audit the output.
• Geo/Vision:
  Experience with geospatial data and modelling or computer vision is a huge plus.
